Broken Hill Health Service Welcomes Four New Orthopaedic Surgeons

14 June 2018

Broken Hill residents will now benefit from an extended weekly orthopaedic service with the appointment of four new specialist surgeons.

Dr André Nel, Director of Medical Services, said he was delighted to announce the appointment of four orthopaedic surgeons to the Far West Local Health District, all experienced in a wide range specialisations.

“We are very pleased to welcome doctors Robert Wallace, Mike Smith, Matthew Hutchinson and Justin Alexander, who will make a large contribution to patient care in our district,” Dr Nel said.

Each new surgeon is specialised in the following area of practice;

• Dr Robert Wallace – Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon

• Dr Mike Smith – Foot, ankle and knee Orthopaedic Surgeon

• Dr Matthew Hutchinson – Paediatric and Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon

• Dr Justin Alexander – Hand and Upper Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon

The surgeons all have practices based in Adelaide and have been given long term contracts through the Far West Local Health District, securing quality surgical services for the district.

Each surgeon will visit Broken Hill for two days, once a month on rotation, thereby providing a weekly service, improving on the previous fortnightly service.

The surgeons will consult patients in clinics in Broken Hill and perform elective surgery across a range of orthopaedic specialty areas. This expands the orthopaedic procedures that will be able to be performed locally. In addition, they will perform emergency orthopaedic surgery.

“These surgeons will enable us to provide a range of orthopaedic procedures locally. For instance, we are now able to provide shoulder replacement surgery”, Dr André Nel said.

“With these surgeons performing emergency procedures, the need to travel outside the district will reduce.”

These long-term appointments follow an extensive recruitment process which attracted strong interest.

“I am very pleased with the level on interest shown and I look forward to announcing further appointments soon,” said Dr Nel.
