The Far West LHD Media Unit is responsible for all media inquiries and interviews with Far West LHD staff members. The Unit regularly advises on major public health issues and disease outbreaks, through media releases, media conferences and, sometimes, special telephone hotlines.

The Media Unit is the primary point of contact for news organisations. All media enquiries must come through the Media Unit in the first instance. This includes:

  • Requests for interviews
  • Photo requests of staff, patients or our facilities
  • General enquiries about health issues
  • Any condition updates on patients who have been injured in an accident or are otherwise of interest to the media

Please do not call our hospitals directly as they are not allowed to provide this information.

Staff are not permitted to speak to journalists or representatives of media organisations without the knowledge or permission of the Media Officer.

An On-Call Media Officer is available after normal business hours to assist media with urgent enquiries. This is organised on a roster basis and the correct person to contact is available via a voicemail message on 0411 119 592.

Good Performance In Emergency Department And Operating Theatre


Treatment times in the Emergency Department at the Broken Hill Hospital during January to March 2017 remained favourable compared to same quarter the previous year, it was reported in the latest Bureau of Health Information (BHI) Hospital Quarterly data released today.

This was whilst the Emergency Department experienced 5,348 people attending for the quarter, an increase of 368 (7.4%) people compared to same quarter last year. Up to 89.4% of those patients left the ED within four hours of attending and the time people waited for treatment to start also remained steady across all triage categories.

The BHI quarterly report also shows elective surgery waiting figures continued their good performance.

All patients (100%) received their elective surgery in the hospital within the clinically recommended timeframe in the urgent (30 days) category. 94% and 97.5% received their elective surgery within the clinically recommended timeframe in the semi-urgent (90 days) and non-urgent (365 days) categories respectively

There were 256 elective surgical procedures performed in the hospital in the quarter and the median waiting time for elective surgery categories remained mostly steady in the urgent category being 13 days (steady) and semi-urgent 54 days (six day decrease). Non-urgent category recorded 257 days (96 day increase) which was comparable to its peer group of hospitals.

The BHI quarterly report summarises public hospitals’ performance across the State against NSW Ministry of Health benchmarks and targets. The Elective Surgery Categories are set by the Ministry of Health and are based on standard surgical response timeframes for specific diagnoses. There is flexibility in the system, wherein a patient’s categories for surgery can be changed if there is a sound clinical reason to do so. This requires consultation between the hospital, the patient and their surgeon, and may see them moved up the waiting list.

Ms Dale Sutton, A/Chief Executive Far West LHD, congratulated staff for continuing to maintain good performance in both the Emergency Department and Operating Theatre for the quarter.
