Far West Lhd Promoting April Falls Day
The Far West Local Health District is promoting April Falls Day (3 April) this year under the theme ‘Moving right to stay upright’.
Mobility and falls prevention is everyone’s business and poor balance and strength will affect a person’s mobility and put them at an increased risk of a fall.
“In hospital a person’s mobility may be reduced due to the effects of medications, acute events and illnesses, cognitive impairment and/or delirium,” said Jane Cain, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Chronic & Complex Care. “Balance and mobility may further deteriorate during a hospital stay if a person is less active.”
“That’s why April Falls Day 2017 is an important opportunity to promote moving right to stay upright!” she said.
This year the Far West LHD’s Falls Prevention Working Group will be promoting April Falls Day in the BH Hospital foyer on Tuesday, 11 April 2017 with an information display. Staff will be available to discuss strategies to prevent falls and share information about Stepping On and Tai Chi.
A colouring competition will be run to promote balance in children. You can find the entry form in the BDT on Monday, 3 April and at the Physio Reception in the Hospital.
The competition is open to the following age categories: Under 5 yrs, 5yrs–8yrs and 9yrs–12yrs. Completed entries can be left in the box in the hospital foyer near the piano. The competition closes on 26 April when the winners will be announced on 28 April at 11am. Prizes will be age-related gift packs.
All hospital wards are also being invited to participate in the April Falls Day Best Ward display during the week of April 1-7 and Allied Health staff will be speaking on the radio about falls prevention programs. The Carer Support team will be visiting community groups promoting balance and strength.
