What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a specialised area of allied health that helps people to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and function with the aim of promoting maximum independence and/or quality of life. Physiotherapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, whose movement and function are compromised by the process of ageing or that of injury or disease.   They work with patients to identify and improve their movement and function and assist the rehabilitation process by developing and restoring the affected body system.

Physiotherapy (PT) has many specialties including neurological, cardiopulmonary, geriatrics, orthopaedic, sports, paediatrics and women’s health. PT management commonly includes prescription of, or assistance with specific exercises, manual therapy, education, hydrotherapy and functional rehabilitation.
